Hedgehogs

Things to look out for

If you see a hedgehog out during the daytime, it may in trouble as they are usually out during the evening/night time – act quickly, and if possible

Assess the situation, does the hedgehog seem to be wobbly or lying on its side or just doesn’t look right.

Put the hedgehog in a box (make sure there are air holes)

Put the box somewhere cool and quiet

The hedgehog may be injured (not always obvious) so if you notice flies around it then please don’t waste time - act fast.

Birds

Between May and late August many birds are leaving the nest in their first attempt to fly.  This is a very vulnerable time for these fledglings as they are learning to fly.  You will see them around in your garden. Please don’t pick them up.  This is a natural process and their parents will be around encouraging them to fly and feed themselves.

You can help by

Keeping cats and dogs in (away from the area) as much as possible for a few days if you have a fledgling bird in your garden

Put a collar with a bell on your cat, so the birds are alerted that a cat is nearby

Keep an eye on them, from a distance to make sure they are safe from predators.

If a bird is injured or if a cat or dog does attack a bird then you need to act fast

Put the bird in a box (make sure it has air holes)

Put the box somewhere cool and quiet

Phone us – 0115 9305587 or 07773 680 264

Cat and dog saliva is very toxic and the bird will need antibiotics

Injured creatures may go into shock.  It's a good idea to put a heat pad or hot water bottle wrapped in a tea towel in the box with them - make sure there's enough room for them to move off the heat source if they need to.  Please do not use a heat source if there is evidence of flies/maggots
